Ukraine: Attacks on Education in Ukraine, Situation Report, as of May 14, 2019

Source: UN Children s Fund, Education Cluster Country: Ukraine
Since the start of 2019, the Ukraine Education Cluster has received reports regarding 14 conflict-related incidents resulting in physical damages to school infrastructure, 2 education facilities that have been temporarily closed, 3 cases of military presence in close vicinity to the education facility and 4 incidents resulting in threat of death or injuries to students, teachers and parents. In May 2019 the recent incidents resulting in damages to school infrastructure have happened in school #4 in Zolote-5/Mykhailivka (Luhanska NGCA) and school in Troitske (Luhanska GCA). On 8 May eight windows at the school sustained new damages due to gunfire. This is 8th time this school sustains damages since the beginning of 2019. The school was also temporarily closed for almost a month in February/March due to insecurity in the area affecting access to education for around 100 boys and girls. Another incident has happened on 6 May 2019 at Troitske school (Luhansk GCA). The school has sustained minor damages due to shelling and shooting in its vicinity. Around 30 children were evacuated and taken to a safe space, and the school remained closed for at least 2 days following the incident. Since the beginning of the conflict in 2014 over 750 education facilities have been damaged and many more experienced disruptions to education. The Ukraine Education Cluster estimates that over 700,000 children and teachers in more than 3,500 education facilities in eastern Ukraine are affected by the hostilities and in need of humanitarian assistance. More than 400,000 children experience direct impact of the conflict as they live, play and go to school within the 20-km on both sides of the “contact line”, where shelling and extreme levels of mine-contamination threaten their lives and wellbeing
