Last week, Parliament raised concerns over the issue, with police confirming the problem has to do with tender processes. The worry now is that rape and sexual assault crimes won t be dealt with in the manner they should. READ: Thousand children tell inquiry about rape, abuse According to crime statistics released in the previous financial year, an average of 110 rapes happens in South Africa every day. The problem arose last year when two companies bidding to supply the kits were disqualified during the tender process - for failing to meet certain requirements. It was then discovered that a third supplier, which did meet the required specifications, was under criminal investigation. READ: Police admits to shortage of DNA and rape kits “Last year around this time, there was a problem. The situation was indeed dire, said national police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo. But having said that, we were able to put measures in place and I can’t say that right now we are in the same predicament. We told provinces to each preview for the rape kits on a month-to-month basis, he said. Naidoo said every police station across the country currently has about 45 rape kits.
