SARS tax collection gives Treasury boost

SARS tax collection gives Treasury boost Estelle.Bronkhorst Wed, 10/29/2025 - 12:45 JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s tax coffers are filling up faster than expected.SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter told Parliament that revenue collected to the end of September hit R925-billion, two percent higher than the forecast for the first half of the fiscal year. The improvement was supported by withdrawals from the two-pot retirement system, which generated an additional R6-billion for the fiscus.Year-on-year, total revenue grew by 9.3 percent. This was driven by stronger domestic VAT collections, corporate provisional taxes, and PAYE receipts, alongside enhanced compliance efforts.Additional gains came from customs and excise measures, including increased duties on imported clothing and footwear. This performance offers encouraging news ahead of the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, to be presented by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on 12 November.
