President Cyril Ramaphosa in Parliament
CAPE TOWN - CAPE TOWN – President Cyril Ramaphosa says he had no clue that he was socialising in front of Hangwani Maumela s house until the man introduced himself.Speaking during a question-and-answer session in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Tuesday, Ramaphosa addressed viral social media footage showing him outside Maumela’s home in Sandton.READ| The President was jogging, not visiting Maumela’ - PresidencyHe said: “47 years ago, I got married to his father s sister, his aunt. We divorced 43 years ago. When I said to honourable John Steenhuisen in 2022 [that] I did not know him, because I had never encountered him, I had never seen him, that was gospel truth.”Ramaphosa added that it was only in 2023, during one of his routine walks in his neighborhood, that he and his then-advisor passed by Maumela’s house.“As we were walking past that house, I saw construction for quite a while. I kept asking whose house this is; it is a massive house. I wanted to know, but I never got the information. “As we were walking, a car came past and Tbo Touch [radio personality Thabo Molefe] comes out with another gentleman who wants to talk to me and photograph me. So we stop, and we are now against the wall of this massive house. And that is when the photograph happens. The allegations are that the person who was in the photograph is Maumela. It was Mr Tbo Touch and Mr Jones from the US, I later learnt,” Ramaphosa told the NCOP.Ramaphosa maintains that he has never dealt with Maumela nor does he visit his house.
