SA warned not to relax after FATF greylist removal Estelle.Bronkhorst Mon, 10/27/2025 - 05:59 JOHANNESBURG - National Treasury is warning South Africa not to be complacent and relax now that it s off the greylist.The Financial Action Task Force added South Africa to the greylist in February 2023 for failing to comply with international standards around money laundering and terror financing.Being grey-listed is a warning that a country’s financial systems have weaknesses that criminals could exploit.WATCH: SA set to exit FATF greylistIt triggers enhanced monitoring, meaning global banks, investors and businesses treat transactions involving South Africa as higher-risk.To get off the list, the country had to meet 22 specific actions. We’re going to be assessed next year, and they’ll look back and see what happened up to the greylisting and after, said Ismail Momoniat, technical advisor to National Treasury. They say they’re confident we continue to improve without someone watching us, now we have to demonstrate we can be effective.
