How AKA murder arrests caused a rift between Sibiya and Mkhwanazi Zandile.Khumalo Mon, 10/13/2025 - 16:09 Shadrack Sibiya CAPE TOWN – Suspended Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya, has painted a bleak picture of his relationship with KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.Testifying before Parliament’s ad hoc committee on Monday, Sibiya said he and Mkhwanazi had a “good” working relationship for years, until tensions surfaced following arrests made in connection with the 2023 murder of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes.READ | AKA and Tibz murder case postponed to June 2026Sibiya said then-Police Minister Bheki Cele approached him to confirm that authorities had arrested the right suspects. He says he responded to the affirmative, following which Cele asked to be briefed on the arrest.“Cele asked if a team could brief him, since he would have to respond to questions in other forums, especially from the media. I said that could be arranged,” Sibiya testified. He admits his misstep was contacting the KwaZulu-Natal deputy police commissioner instead of Mkhwanazi to facilitate the process, a move he says was made to ensure “there were no delays”.This, Sibiya says, enraged Mkhwanazi, who later called and slammed him for summoning KwaZulu-Natal officials without his knowledge.
