ArcelorMittal appeals Labour Court ruling on retrenchments Zandile.Khumalo Thu, 10/30/2025 - 06:00 JOHANNESBURG - ArcelorMittal South Africa has appealed the latest ruling by the Labour Court.Numsa brought an urgent interdict at the beginning of October to stop retrenchments.This is after the winding down of the Longs Business in Vereeniging and Newcastle, which has been deferred since 2023.READ: Court orders ArcelorMittal to reinstate workersThe union says the current retrenchment process started in January and halted in March after interventions, just carried on in October.Numsa argued in court that a fresh Section 189 process should have started.The Labour Court agreed, and said AMSA should conduct further consultations and that no further dismissals are to take place, and that employees should be reinstated. AMSA has applied for leave to appeal the decision, saying that it has complied with its obligations to consult fairly, and that any further delay in winding down the business would have put the entire company at risk.
