Joburg bleeds water as leaks go unchecked Estelle.Bronkhorst Tue, 10/28/2025 - 12:55 JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg is losing millions of litres of water each day, in a city that simply cannot afford to waste water.To make matters worse, some leaks have been flowing for years.At a Randburg church, a pipe has been leaking for five years, with no sign of repair despite repeated calls. The leak has turned the property into a hazard and a symbol of the city’s neglect.READ: Rand Water urges residents to use water sparinglyAcross Johannesburg, water continues to gush from leaks that go unrepaired for months and in some cases, years. For residents, it’s not just wasted water, but wasted trust in a system that’s meant to serve them.WaterCAN says the city’s failure to timeously deal with leaks is an indication that it simply doesn’t know what it’s doing. The city says it’s currently working to clear its water leak backlog and has also committed to attending to the Randburg church’s five-year leak immediately. eNCA’s Nabeelah Shaikh reports.
