CAPE TOWN – Suspended Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya, was emphatic in his rejection of claims that he is a rogue cop.“I have never been one in the 37 years I have served in the police. I deny that and they must prove it,” Sibiya told the SAPS Ad Hoc Committee on Tuesday.Sibiya has been testifying before the parliamentary committee probing allegations of corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system. It was triggered by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July.In that explosive media briefing, Mkhwanazi also exposed alleged ties between senior police officials and criminal syndicates. At the centre of the allegations are controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Brown Mogotsi, an alleged associate of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. The two men also feature heavily at the Madlanga Commission, a judicial inquiry into the same corruption and interference allegations which is running parallel to the ad hoc committee proceedings.Sibiya says he got to know Mogotsi as someone who approached him with intelligence. He claims Mogotsi called to warn him about individuals who allegedly had information that could be used against him, something Sibiya says he was already aware of.He described Matlala as a “well-known” service provider for the SAPS.Ad hoc committee member Xola Nqola pressed Sibiya on why he would engage with individuals such as Mogotsi, even going as far as dining with him. Nqola also questioned why Sibiya was not concerned that a civilian had access to sensitive information involving his intelligence team.Sibiya, who at first maintained that he saw no issue with Mogotsi’s intelligence, about-turned to admit that he was concerned
